Sony PD170 Camera

For our Media, we have been learning how to use the Sony PD170 camera in order to record and download our films.

GETTING STARTED:

POWER SWITCH - under the right thumb when the camera is hand held
The power switch has four positions….

Press in the small green button and then rotate the power switch to VCR. The camera should bleep and the transport controls illuminate - you can use the player/recorder to review your tapes by operating the STOP, REWIND, PLAY, FAST FORWARD and PAUSE buttons.

OFF (CHG) is obviously the power off position and used to save battery. You should also use this position when charging a battery.

Press in the small green button and then rotate the power switch to CAMERA. You should now see a picture.

MEMORY - select when recording information to the memory stick
NB -If you still cannot see a picture in the viewfinder check that you have removed the lens cap and then check that your battery has some charge in it.

INSERTING A TAPE
Press the small blue EJECT button inwards and then slide downwards.
Insert the tape
First close the inner cassette compartment first where it says PUSH
Finally close the outer cassette lid where it says PUSH

START / STOP - under the right thumb when the camera is hand held
This is a red button with the power switch control around it.

TO START RECORDING - Press the red button, the message REC will appear in the viewfinder
TO STOP RECORDING -Press the red button again, the message STBY will appear in the viewfinder.

NB when there is a tape in the camera it will automatically default to save mode after five minutes. You will still see a picture but it will take a few seconds longer to drop into record.

RECORDING STILL IMAGES
You may have to record still images for download onto a web page.

Press the silver PHOTO button (beside the zoom rocker) firmly. The camera will "blink" and record the still for seven seconds. Seven red markers will countdown the recording.
Pictures can also be recorded on a memory stick inserted into the camera.

POWER ZOOM
The 'T' stands for TELEPHOTO and will zoom the lens in.
The 'W' stands for WIDE-ANGLE and will zoom the lens out.
Press the zoom controller gently for a slow zoom speed and press harder for a faster zoom speed.
There is also a manual zoom ring (behind the focus ring) The zoom speed is controlled by the speed at which the ring is turned. Turn clockwise to zoom out and anticlockwise to zoom in.

AUTO LOCK
When the HOLD/AUTO LOCK switch is in AUTO LOCK position - the camcorder will automatically adjust the IRIS, GAIN, SHUTTER SPEED and WHITE BALANCE.
With the HOLD/AUTO LOCK turned to the middle position you have the choice of operating the above features manually or on auto
To retain the settings you have adjusted manually, turn the HOLD/AUTO LOCK to the HOLD position.

AUTO FOCUS
With the FOCUS switch set to AUTO the camera will automatically focus for you.
Set the switch to MANUAL to take control of focusing and appears in the viewfinder.
The PUSH AUTO button below will automatically focus the camera on whatever is in the centre of the picture. When you release the button it will revert to the manual mode.

STEADY SHOT
This is an optical means of compensating for camera shake.
You can switch it on/off with the STEADY SHOT in the menus.
When switched off - the off symbol appears in the viewfinder/LCD
It should be switched on in most circumstances because even lightweight tripods are inherently unstable.

For a great explanation on how image stabilisers work take a look at this from the tvcameramen.com site.

EDIT SEARCH
Momentarily holding down the EDIT SEARCH rocker marked "-" allows you to look at the last two seconds of the last picture you recorded.

By holding down the "+" or "-" side of the edit search you can forward or rewind through the tape.

Be careful when you use the edit search facility. If you forward onto blank tape and start recording, there will be a break in time code - which will give you problems when you come to edit. Always cue up on the last recorded picture to ensure you have continuous timecode throughout your rushes. The END SEARCH function will help you do this…
The END SEARCH button will take you to the end of the last recorded section. The camera rewinds or fast forwards the tape until it finds the last picture frame - it will play the last five seconds of your pictures and park, ready to record.

PRE FLIGHT CHECKS
Always check that the viewfinder is in focus.
First of all make sure the lens cap is in place. All you should be able to see in the viewfinder is some of the time code, sound and battery data.
Under the rubber eye cup, on the viewfinder, you'll find the viewfinder diopter adjustment.
Alter the diopters adjustment until the data is completely out of focus.
Slowly bring the data back into focus. You may find it helps to rock the adjuster backwards and forwards – until your sure that the symbols are in perfect focus.
Check all of your batteries – you should have at least three fully charged camera batteries in your kit along with some spare AA batteries for your microphones.
Check the tripod hot shoe matches the tripod. You cannot mix and match one manufacturers hot shoe with another manufacturers tripod.

Adjust the Velcro fastening on the side strap until it is comfortable for your hand size.

THE LCD SCREEN
Once you pull out the LCD screen the viewfinder is automatically switched off.
However, both the Viewfinder and LCD will be on together when the screen is turned through 180 degrees

Once the LCD screen is re-housed into the side of the camera the viewfinder becomes operational.

When the screen is turned through 180 degrees (to do a piece to camera) it drops into "mirror mode".

From that screen position you can also push the screen flat against the camera – with the screen facing outwards. This may be useful when conducting an interview with the camera on a tripod.
You can adjust the brightness of the screen by using the LCD BRIGHT +/- controls on the left hand edge of the screen.

You can also adjust the cameras backlight brightness in the menus
NB in mirror mode a small cartoon face appears in the viewfinder (cute!).
Take care of the LCD screen….

Do not touch the surface of the screen
Do not lift the camera by the viewfinder or screen
Remember the LCD screen uses more battery power than the viewfinder. Revert to viewfinder only use, if battery power is running out.
Exposing the screen to sunlight for extended periods will damage it.

Brief

For our Media, we were given the Preliminary task, which is to film a short two minute movie. The task it that we film 2 people, one person comes into the room and walks across up to the table on the other side of the room where the second person will be sitting and waiting. Once we get these two people together, each of them could say a few shot like line like "You're late" for example.

As were are preparing for this task, we have also been learning about how to use a PD170 camera and how to set up the audio, frame, lighting, sound and recording of the camera. We have also been learning about how to edit the short movie once it has been completed by editing the scenes from the mistakes that were made and how to add some sound or music into the movie clip.

When we were making the movie and editing it, we had to make sure that some of the mistakes that were made were taken out, but some could not be changed, so we might have managed to get away with a few mistakes.

Ideology

Ideology is the views from what media captures of the different beliefs and cultures from different regions from around the world. Ideology lets us know about what other people’s beliefs and cultures are because it places it into the media and we read or watch or listen to the media. If we didn’t have Ideology, then we wouldn’t know much about the different cultures and beliefs of the world.
Ideology goes behind the background of the different cultures and brings the information back to the media for they would use the Ideology information to show this other culture what it is about. For example, We know about the Indians, we know that they eat strong foods like curry, they wear a lot of those long scarf’s, some are Christine, est. And how do we now this? Because Ideology put the information there for us to know about the culture and beliefs.
Sometimes they would put pictures up of what the different cultures are like, For example, if you look in a magazine that is all about the Indian cultures, you would see pictures of Indian women with dark kin, black hair, wearing a long colourful dress, has a red spot on her forehead, est. So when you see this woman in the magazine, you would recognise the culture because of what Ideology put into the media.
The same goes to religion. Like Jewish and Christine people for example. We know that the Jews believe in God and Christine people believe in Jesus. How do we know? Because Ideology. Ideology tells up mainly about the people’s beliefs and therefore, lets the world know about their believes and why they believe in this or that.
This could effect some people in a good way, this could effect people in a bad way. That is when Racism could come in. Some people could go against what Ideology say about the other cultures and beliefs because they don’t like their culture or don’t believe in it.
Year ago, like in the second world war for example, the Germans hated the Jews and in order for more people to criticize them, they made pictures in the media of Jewish people by making them all have big rat’s noses and long beards. This showed what the Jewish culture looked like to the Germans and they also placed religious pictures of Jewish people taking blood from Jesus. This showed the Germans why the Jewish culture were against Jesus. This therefore caused a holocaust to happen.
So Ideology can effect people’s beliefs and their cultures, but it can also allow us to understand how the culture works, like if you are in Israel, you know when and where to cover your shoulders. If you are in China, you know that if you eat all your food, they think you are still hungry. we react with the culture to show some of our culture’s respect.

We therefore learn about more about the different cultures and beliefs of what people have.

He weeps, he rails, he mopes until finally, his step-brother Brian suggests he goes to Hawaii , so Peter heads for a resort on Oahu where he ends up seeing Sarah and her new boyfriend, Aldous, a polymorphously perverse English rocker. The weeping and moping starts once again, until Peter is rescued by Rachel, a thoughtful hotel clerk who invites him to a luau and to hang out. Although he constantly runs into Sarah and Aldous, Peter starts to come alive again. Will Sarah realize what she's lost, and what about Rachel?

Frames 2

When filming a movie, you must also be aware of what the camera is shooting. So in these 2 pictures, we have these 9 frames which each has screen shot of the scene. The editors use these frames to help the movie makers find a way to make the scene look a lot better. When filming a scene with a nice view in the background, it is best not to just focus the middle frame straight onto the object for it would look too simple and doesn't seem very interesting. So what is the solution to solve this problem?

Simple, we move the frame across the scene a little to the left, or to the right. You could aso move the frame up a little or down a little. You will then see that the main object in the scene is no longer in the middle, but it's not just the main object we need to be focussing on, but also what lied behind the object, like the view of the sea. So we move the tree to the side a then there is a huge difference. This makes the scene look much better and interesting.

Frame

When filming someone or more then one person, there are many different types of frames that are used for each shot which are important in their own different way.
For incidence, we have the Wide Shot, or you could call it the Full shot. This is a frame that captures the character’s full body so you then get to see what the person’s body language is. And it also catches the background of where the scene is taking place. This lets the audience know where about the character’s whereabouts are or may give a clue to where the character could be. Also in the wide shot, you could involve more then 1 person so that you could see perhaps 2 people or more talking to another, plus there is always a chance that if the shot is taken in a busy place for example, you could also see more people in the far background who look just like everyday people which makes the movie look a little more realistic.

But be aware, staying on just one frame can get boring after a while, making the audience loose interest. That is when we move onto another frame, like the medium frame. The media frame is a close up shot of the character which takes a shot from the waist to the head. So you then get a shot of half the body of the character, but it would mean less background, yet more emotion coming towards the facial expressions.

But once again, the audience will start to loose interest into the frame shot after a while, so we then change it to another frame shot. We then have the close up shot which is….you guessed it, a close up frame that shows a shot of the person’s face. T his doesn’t bring to much attention to the background because it focuses more on the facial expressions of the character. You can then see a good view of what the character’s emotions are going to be, like sad, happy, shocked, angry, Joy, est.

There is also another frame which is often done in America and mostly in cowboy movies. I present to you the Cowboy shot. Why is it called a cowboy shot? Well, that is because the cowboy shot is a frame that captures the shot of the character from the knees to the head which that frame shot is often seen in cowboy films.

But the real point of the frames shots are that you must make sure that you keep on changing the fames around for if the frame just stays on one frame shot, then it’s audience will start to loose interest and get bored, so the frames must always change after a little while.

180 Degree Rule

Why is the 180 Degree Rule is one of the most important rules to follow when making a film. What is so important about it?

The 180 Well, the rule is that when you want to film 2 characters for incidence, and that they are being filmed by the camera has the view over one of the character’s shoulder, you must make sure that the cameras are on the same side of one of the red lines if you could see in the picture above. And facing each other of course.

Why should the cameras be on the same side on one line?

It is important that you keep the cameras on one side of one of the lines because they will both have a clear shot of which way each character is facing at the right direction. For example, the camera behind Mr. Purple is filming a shot of what point of view Mr. Purple can see. So you then have a shot of Mr. Purple’s shoulder on the right hand side, while Mr. Orange, is being seen from the left hand side of the camera‘s point of view. Or it could be the other way if you want it to be.
But if this rule is broken, say for incidence, you take one of the camera’s across one of the lines, you then will end up filming a shot of what would look like Mr. Purple and Mr. Orange’s point of view, being seen staring in the same direction which will make the audience confused.

There are a few occasions where you can break the rule, but I would recommend you do it while Filming instead of just shots, so the audience would know that the camera has moved in another direction.

About Media.

What is Media?

Media is what surrounds us everyday and everywhere we go. It can be found in Magazines, News papers, T.V, Radio, posters and est. Media is what gives us our everyday information of what is going on at what time, what day, what place around us and around the world. Media doesn’t just tells us what is going on NOW, but also tells us what is coming soon, like a new movie or theatre show at what date and where. Without Media, where would we be? Media plays the most important part in our lives for it lets us know what to be warned about and what to be aware of where and when. Media is basically a lifesaver, it gives us a warning and a chance to know what to be aware of what danger that is lurking outside our doors like escaped criminals or any flood warnings for example. Media can be found anywhere, it is non stop news and information giving that continues to feed our minds. Media can also be a great help to people who cannot travel much and must stay in one place often. It also helps those who are in need by placing adverts up of information for Hospitals, vets, RSPCC, RSPCA, Child helpline, Banks and est. Media is Globalization, which makes the important news national around the world. One important Media can quickly spread across the globe and as a result, in just a day, the whole world would be aware of what the news is. Just like a bomb that has gone off, a wave of news media splashes it’s way through country after country. There are many types of different media news in a different media company in every country. They have their own business names, their different language and different kinds of products. There are 2 types of Media, though they don’t make much of a difference. There is Media you read in News papers and Magazines and Media you look up on the TV and Radio. The difference between these two are the fact that one has more action and examples of what the news media is rather then just reading it with descriptions that you have to only use your imagination. You get to experience the sound and look of what the Media is showing you and it makes you think, “wow, I want to see that” or “That looks very interesting“. Media can be found on the internet as well. Media on the internet is Bananas, there are videos, websites, articles and a Search where you look up what everyday news your looking for. There are plenty of websites on the internet where you an find business jobs, Your personal Bank, rent tickets to see a sports match, Show in theatres, cinemas, airports, train stations, shopping online and many more, more information then a yellow page book. There are media adverts for many new objects such as games, clothes, Men and Women’s bathroom products, sweets, DVDs, music, shoes, jewellery and many, many, many more. These adverts are what the media is doing to try and convince the people to buy the object. Not just by showing a picture of it, but by describing it, what is it, what does it do, what the price is, all this information, to get the people who see the object to buy to object. Media on the T.V adverts often use people who are good looking and have a great body so that they could get the people’s attention and make the viewers think, “I wish I had a good body like that”, the advert then shows the product that is being used so that it can tell what the advert is advertising. This immediately gives the people a thought of reaction to the product and makes them think that if they get the product, they’ll be cool like the people on the advert. The same goes to magazines and poster. They show a picture of a pretty woman or a muscular man using a product. This gets the viewer’s attention once again. The idea of selling a product on media is by finding the solution to getting what people want to look like and in doing so, they use good looking, healthy and famous people for the job. For example, there’s a picture of David Beckham and as you know, he is a famous footballer and for there on he has loads of fans and is good looking. You then see David Beckham wearing a pair of new men’s jeans with nothing to cover his chest so that you could see how healthy and fit he looks. As you could imagine to what the boys around the word would be like, they would look at themselves and think, “I wish I had a muscular body and a great hairdo like that, why can’t I be like that?” The boys, then look down at the Jeans and the shop where their next reaction takes place. “Maybe if I buy a pair of those David Beckham Jeans, I could look cool, just like David Beckham”, this is what the next part of the boys’ mind tells them and so the next reaction would be to go to the store and buy a pair. So there for, Media has a great effect of using famous and good looking people as a trap to hypnotizing people to come to the stores and buy the products. One of the other ways into getting people to become interested in the products by looking into the media is by the set up of the pictures, once again, you want to hypnotize the viewers, so in order to do that, the pictures of the products must be set out perfectly. It would require colour, colour is what brings the audience to their attention of the product being shown. Colour is what shows the emotions of the product, like if it was grey, it would give it a sort of edgy look. If it was yellow, it would give the product a bright look. Blue is for boys, pink is for girls, colours is a sign of the product of what feeling it gives towards you. A background is needed for various products as well. The background gives a little of a character to the product and makes it very exciting looking. Like a pair of new sneakers for example. Sitting in the picture are a nice pair of new sneakers, and in the background, you have a picture of a playground or a football pitch. This makes it exciting for kids because they would know by telling from the background what they are for. The background is also what gives information out of what the product if for or for what type of place it’s for. But he most important thing about the products being on sale in media, is the media. People wouldn’t just want to buy a product just because it looks nice or have a colourful background. But it need information of what the product is and what it is used for. Without the information, no one is ganna be too interested in the product because they don’t have a clue what it is. It is always very important to have information on every product that is for sale. No media about it would make the product useless. Having a picture is what makes the media glow, especially on magazines and the front cover. The point of making the audience interested in the magazine that is in front of them is the same as the products for sale. You find a good picture that is big enough to fill in a page with a colour background and of course…media. Every magazine needs to have a title that is big and outstanding then the rest of the media that is on the same page. The title is what makes the magazine it’s own magazine. When you look at the title, you would immediately recognise the magazine you’re looking for. But the title isn’t just what the front cover needs that is important. Your magazine would need the date and the price tag. A magazine cover would once again need media shown on the cover that describes what the magazine in about. But it doesn’t mean it would need to be written in about 100 words to describe it. All it really needs is just a few simple words describing it. Some magazines would have more then one picture on the front cover. There is a main front cover which is the one that fills up the page, and it would have a couple of little thumbnail pictures with a little media to show example of what is inside the magazine. Without the media on the magazine, no one would know what the magazine is about and wouldn’t find any interest on it. The media would use some quote from people’s stories as well like, “My husband tried to kill me”. This give a message to our readers who are probably thinking, “Oh, a woman’s story of nearly getting killed, sounds interesting” or a description media of “True life story“. Once AGAIN, it catches the attention of the readers and it urges them to want to read the stories. The same thing for news papers, on the front cover, there is a picture of a person and a big title and a little media describing it. But then it is cut off halfway through and says “continues on page 5”, and so the readers go to page 5 to read more about the news. So it is another trap to get the readers into reading the news paper. One of the other things about the media is that sometimes, the people who write the media would try to make is sound more interesting by exaggerating a little by making it sound scary or much bigger then it is. For example, there is a huge title on the news paper cover saying, “Will the World End?” This immediately gets the reader’s reaction by making them thing, “Oh my god, is the world really going to end?” And so, it makes the readers want to read the news paper to find out more. Sometimes in the media, occasionally, there is a little confession on what the media writer or news reporter This is wat the news reporter is confessing, he or she is telling the public how she feels about the whole project and so on it makes the people more interested to know that the news reported feel the same way. Sometimes on the media, there is a little joke giving out to give the audience a little amusement so it can attract them. For example, “Well, if the world does end, then I better cancel the news paper and milk”. This give a little amusement to what the news is to make is sound more fun rather then serious all the time. On the TV says. For example, “This indeed makes the public…and myself, feel a little uneasy.“ On the TV, you don’t just get to listen to what the news person it telling you, but it has a clear background of what the news is telling you about by showing you whether it’s live or from being recorded. Then there is body language. As you have probably noticed on the news, you see the news reporters shake their hands around and give a 90 degree turn or walks a little towards the subject as they are speaking. This immediately tells and shows he viewers what they are talking about. But showing the subject with some media isn’t enough. It also requires language. There are two types of languages. There is body language and speaking language. Body language is basically the same as talking in a different way. For example, when the advert person is at a scene where there is music, she/he does either a little dance on depending the type of music to show the viewers how much fun it is or when they are trying to explain something, they use their arms and hands to make shapes of what the subject looks like. Like if the object was very tall, they would lift their arms into the air, or if it was very short, they would lower their arms towards the ground. If they were showing that a car went left, they would put out their left arm, if it went right, they would use their right arm. On the Radio, you wouldn’t be able to see any of that happen, so they use more media to describe the project and use sound effects to make it sound more realistic. If it was about the beach for example, they would put sound effects up of the sea waves and seagulls squawking. If it was at an airport, they would use sound effects of lots of busy people and announcement sounds and of course, the sound of the airplanes being taken off or landing. These sound effects are what really makes the listeners very interesting because it sounds real and it gives them a chance to use their imagination on what is going on at the place where the project is. The other type of language there is, is using some new words to make it sound more interesting. Like if it was a science project for example, they would use, “scientific” words to make the project sound scientifically interesting. Or if it was about something girly, they would use, “girly”, words, like “bitch” for example and change the sound soft the voice to make it sound ore girly. , it is well known a nick name for a girl nowadays. And that’s the thing about language nowadays. Nowadays we use our own codes and short spellings as a sort of language of our own. Mostly coming from teenagers with text phones. When you’re on a mobile phone and your texting a friend saying “, wat u doin tis weeknd? Wanna com ovr?” In proper English, this language is saying, “what you doing this weekend? Want to come over?” But that’s not all, we also sometimes use number codes in our messages like “Gr8”, for example, It is a new spelling of “Great,” because of the way it sounds the number 8. We use these words as codes and codes like these have taken the world by storm in large big cities or any place where there are mobile phones around. Sometimes, we use tapping codes to send out a message and each letter has a secret code. For example, if you are spelling the letter “H”, you would tap about 7 times then pause for the next word. And so on, you keep on tapping and pausing until you have completed your message. But codes don’t just come in letters and numbers, but can also come in shapes. When your watching a video or DVD and you want to stop the movie, you look down on your remote control and click the button that has a shape of a square on it. And when ever you want to play the movie again, you press the button with the triangle facing towards the right. So these buttons have a code that is in a shape for you to recognise what button is for what. Some codes are used to mark a product so that it would be recognised from what business company it comes from. Like logo markings on some clothes such as Abercrombie and Fitch. If you look at the clothes they do, you can see that they has little codes like A-F, meaning Abercrombie and Fitch. You then know that the clothes have been marked with the code of the shop company and so you would like to go to the shop and buy some of the clothes they do there. So once again, it is another way to attract the people into coming into the shops, by coding and symbolizing the projects. So next time you walk into a shop and look on a clothing or on the label, you would see a symbol that is printed on so you would know what shop company it comes from. And if people walk by you and see the symbol, they would know where to go and buy one for their self. On TV adverts, the commercials use the same thing like the, “Have you got a WKD side?”. So the WDK is the symbol of what the product is if you also notice, the product has a quote as well. So on the T.V adverts, when you see an advert about a store like Marks and Spencer’s, you see the quote, “This is not just Christmas food, it’s MSN food”, and so the Mark and Spencer’s symbol has a quote of it’s own to recognise what store it is. And for Tesco’s, there is, “Every little helps”, another quote from another market. But there are some various adverts that instead of having a quote, has a different way to symbolize the company. Like ASDA, in stead of having a quote at the end, they just simply use the pat on the bum technique and sounds of coins cluttering around. This is a message saying that the prices are low and therefore you get plenty of change. The same thing goes to “118 118.” If you have watched the adverts of the 118 118 advert, you would notice that there is one thing that they are doing to symbolize the show, and that would be by using a moustache. You see these 2 men in their suits with the same moustache and you would immediately recognise what the company they are talking about is about. So some of the examples I have written out, shows an example of one of the different actions in quotes and symbols in what the adverts are trying to produce to the audience to grab their attention once again. Sometimes when watching the TV, can tell the difference between a TV drama show and the real thing. There are a number of ways to tell whether the show is real or not. In drama shows, you would be able to listen clearly to what the characters are saying with plenty of emotions showing because of the way it is acted out, but it’s not just the acting out that is what tells a difference between a drama show or a real life show. It is the quality of the audio and sound. If it was a drama show, you would have the camera stood still and being switched towards the person who is talking in a scene without any shaking or blurs in it. But in real life action, you would see the camera being a little more shaky and would be moved around instead of just quickly being switched to a main talking person. A movie is a lot different between these two. A movie would last up to a couple of hours with good quality and sounds effects. A movie would also have music in the background to make it more dramatic or scary to get the audience full attention and see what their reactions would be. Music in the movies give a great effect on the whole movie and has greater effect on the audience. If it was a horror movie, the music would be very low, dark and dreaded. If it was a happy movie, the music would be loud, joyful and fun. So the music is what really plays the part in the movie and grabs the audience’s attention. But on CCTV, it is a lot different. There is no music, no movement, no sound nor colour depending on what type of CCTV camera it is. You basically just sit and watch the footage of people walking by or perhaps being caught mugging something. It seems rather boring a CCTV camera for just catching clips of people doing normal or bad things. So the only thing that would make the CCTV interesting would be what the person being caught on the camera is doing. So the only way we could tell about what the person is doing is body language. Also, you would notice that a CCTV camera would have the date and time on the camera so that it give information of what time of day then incidence happened.
